KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
A guide from La Esperanza
For more than 27 years, La Esperanza has stood with immigrant families in Sussex County. If you are worried about an encounter with police or immigration officers, you are not alone. This page explains your rights in plain language, so you can feel more prepared.
Everyone in the United States (U.S.) has rights, no matter their immigration status. Knowing these rights ahead of time can help you stay calm and make safe choices.
This page gives general information. It is not legal advice. Every case is different. If you have questions about your immigration case, or if a loved one has been detained (held by police or immigration officers), contact us today. If we can’t help, we have a network of professionals who can.
Save this list. You can also take a photo of it and keep it on your phone.

“Right now I am choosing to exercise my legal rights. I will remain silent, and I refuse to answer your questions. If I am detained, I have the right to contact an attorney immediately. I refuse to sign anything without advice from an attorney. Thank you.” |
